In a previous post, we discoursed on finding two unique organisms that we thought may be a seaweed, algae or biological soil crust variation growing here in Lake Montezuma, Indian Lakes District Arizona....! Here they are again ---

Later in the season, we also found a third species that was a ribbony mixture of the two leafy and stringy varieties. We didn't capture pictures at the time and will keep identifying as it appears after rains.
Upon many different investigations and identification processes with Arizona University and it's extension office, it is believed that both species we found, leafy and stringy, are Nostoc Commune, a cyanobacteria! You can read about it here ---

It is truly glorious to find Nostoc Commune here as our soils, plant, animal, fungal and mineral kingdoms all receive benefit from its bountiful, archaic nature. It is older than soil and helps stabilize all conditions, allowing our earth and soils to retain life giving water and nutrients.

As you may know, our environmental systems as a whole cosmic unit are experiencing soil depletion qualities and these ancient organisms help us sustain life and balance within our delicate and sometimes fragile ecosystems.
Cyanobacteria are prokaryote cells, meaning they lack a membrane bound nuclei, and are different than algae. Algae are eukaryote cells, meaning their nuclei are wrapped in a membrane. Cyanobacteria are single-celled organisms that can exist in multi-cellular states. They create chains of cells forming a filament. How magnificent and magical!
Furthermore, cyanobacterium have specialized cells called heterocysts that can extract nitrogen. They are nitrogen-fixers and help the soil retain it by converting it into molecular form, making nitrogen an available element for bacteria and plants.
These organisms are one of the earliest forms of life before there was green plant life. Oceans were stained purple at that time. A beautiful perspective and glow to envision!
These species are some of the oldest forms of existence on our earths crust and we offer utmost reverence and homage to its divine wisdom and spirituality.
Thank you to all who helped us research, study, and identify the growths and expansions of this high desert terrain. We offer gratitude and appreciation to you and all beings!
May all be happy
May all be free
May all see what is Auspicious
May no one suffer
